Film Review: Apocalypto

I bought this film about two years ago because I had heard great things about it, but never had the opportunity to watch it. I purchased it in China because it was "on sale" for 75 cents. I was thoroughly impressed with the manly allure. If you are female, you will probably not enjoy this movie. It is quite vulgar and explicit in the scenes that it does not cut away from. That being said, I loved the story. Jaguar Paw's village is ravaged by savages and through a set of prophetic circumstances he triumphs after several attempts at his life. The theme running throughout the chases in the film is devotion. Jaguar Paw's pregnant wife and son are trapped in a quarry that is quickly filling up with water from a storm. He is desperately trying to get back to them before they drown. I won't spoil it for you, but I would definitely recommend this for all men. If you enjoyed Braveheart, this is a win in your repertoire.

I actually enjoyed this movie...not for the very graphic scenes, but for the story of heart and realistic life struggles in that day. And, since Mesoamerica is my most knowledgeable area of academia, I enjoyed seeing something that was actually pretty realistic instead of the hokey Discovery-channel-esque specials that we usually see about these people groups that are full of doom and gloom and spooky music.
